Twelve Fundamentals for Conservation Success

Abstract The case studies analysed in this book present a diversity of lessons that can guide the conceptualisation and implementation successful conservation biodiversity research projects Africa. Twelve fundamentals are identified illustrated – key elements strategic opportunism. These are: Identify an urgent existential crisis; Present inspiring vision, clear goals realistic strategies; Develop networks synergistic collaboration; Communicate effectively with all stakeholders; Synthesise existing or create new knowledge understanding; Secure institutional support develop project capacity; Promote champions nurture leadership talents; Create capitalise on quick wins; Recognise critical importance good governance; Embrace unexpected opportunities serendipity; Seize political moment changes creative financing strategies.
